FSA Spending Guide: How to Use Your FSA Before 12/31

December 31 is a crucial deadline for many Flexible Spending Account participants who, under the Use or Lose rule, will forfeit unspent funds in their account.  If your FSA has a December 31 deadline,  it’s important to make sure you use your FSA before the end of the year.  To help FSA participants use their accounts, we’ve created an FSA spending guide.  Don’t let your funds expire – follow these tips and maximize your savings before the New Year!

Stock Up on Eligible Over-the-Counter Medications

Did you know you can use your FSA on common OTC items, like allergy, cold and sinus medications?  Feminine care products, take tampons and pads, are now FSA eligible too. Make sure your medicine cabinet is stocked up for the upcoming year!

Additional sample OTC eligible expenses:

  • Acne medications
  • Bandages
  • Birth control
  • Diagnostic products
  • First aid kits

Schedule Annual Appointments for You and Your Eligible Dependents

If you’ve been putting off a pesky dentist appointment or annual well visit, see if you can see your doctor before the end of your plan year!   Try making an appointment or see if getting on a wait list is an option.  Some doctors’ offices will give you a call if an opening pops up.  Cancellations can be common towards the end of the year, so it doesn’t hurt to ask.  You can use your FSA for co-pays, deductibles, and amounts due to seeing your physician.

Purchase Eyeglasses and Prescription Sunglasses

In addition to vision expenses like contact lenses and vision appointments, you can use your Health FSA to purchase glasses and prescription sunglasses for you and your eligible expenses.  If you have a current script, you can even order glasses online at places like Warby Parker, which will even send you trial glasses to try on for size and to see which styles you like the best.

Get Dental Care

Use your Health FSA for dental appointments, procedures and braces.  You can also use your Health FSA on other expenses, like routine fillings and braces.

Seek Mental Health Support

Managing your mental health is always important.  With the chaos and stress that the end of year can especially bring to many, managing your mental health on-the-go can help you get the support you need.  And, you can use your Health FSA on expenses like Better Help.
