The Department of Labor, along with the Department of the Treasury, issued a notice that affects COBRA participants in response to the impact of coronavirus pandemic. Under this guidance, certain deadlines have been extended, including allowing you additional time to enroll in group health coverage and pay for COBRA benefits.
*Please be advised that these deadlines now have been temporarily extended due to the current COVID-19 pandemic.*
Each temporary deadline now is determined by excluding the period from March 1, 2020 through the 60th day after the current pandemic-based National Disaster has been declared over by the federal government (the so-called “Outbreak Period”). As a result:
- Your deadline for electing COBRA now has been extended to 60 days after the end of the Outbreak Period;
- Your deadline for paying your first COBRA premium now will be 45 days after your COBRA election date. Since you have 60 days after the end of the Outbreak Period to elect coverage, the deadline for paying your first premium could be as late as 105 days after the end of the Outbreak Period.
- All monthly premiums for coverage during the Outbreak Period will now be due 30 days after the end of the Outbreak Period.
